How cold can air conditioning get?

At Meridian Cooling, our clients often ask “how cold can air conditioning get?” Whilst we all have different preferences and thresholds (for instance, what’s comfortable for one person could be freezing for another), there are certain temperatures and conditions that are best suited for your air conditioning unit. Read on to learn how cold air conditioning can go, along with the best temperatures to set your air con at your property.

Contact us today to learn how we can plan and install the right air conditioning system for your property.

So, how cold can my air con go?

Most air conditioning units are designed to go as low as 17°C, but do note that air conditioners are designed to achieve an inside temperature that is up to 11°C lower than the outside temperature. If you take the air conditioner down to the lowest settings then you may start to see the build-up of ice occurring on the internal fan coil, which will ultimately cause the unit to fully ice up, which will stop it functioning effectively and increase the potential of a condensate leak once the system is defrosted.

What temperature is too cold for air conditioning?

Air conditioning units are set to go no lower than 17°C for a reason. At colder temperatures, condensation can start to develop on your property’s walls which can potentially cause damp and also reduce the performance of the air handler due to icing up issues.

What is the optimum cooling temperature?

We have outlined our recommendations for the best temperature at residential and commercial properties below.

What is the best temperature for residential properties?

On average, 22°C is the ideal air con temperature. This may vary, however depending on:

  • the number of residents at your property
  • if any physical activity takes place at your property
  • how much sunlight directly enters your property

These factors may lead to you dropping the temperature by a degree or two, but it ultimately comes down to what you’re all most comfortable with.

What is the best temperature for commercial properties?

We recommend that you start your air conditioning at 22°C, then increase the temperature by a degree every so often until your staff complain about being too warm. This way, you can save around 5% on your energy bill for every degree above 22°C.
