Residential heat pumps: heating your home
Heat pumps are a more energy efficient way to heat your home than a traditional gas boiler, so much so that the government is phasing out the installation of gas boilers, with 2025 being the year the ban comes into play.
Ground source and air source heat pumps work by transferring heat from the ground or air respectively to another location (your home). Compared to gas boilers, heat pumps only use a small amount of electricity and have a 200%-600% efficiency rate.
The government is currently running a boiler upgrade scheme to encourage homeowners to switch their gas boiler for a heat pump. Successful applicants could receive £5,000 off an air source heat pump and £6,000 off a ground source heat pump.
Meridian Cooling has been installing heat pumps long before they became a government initiative, including installing air source heat pumps to 44 dwellings. Our qualified engineers are on hand to advise you on the best type of heat pump for your home and carry out installation and maintenance.

Heat pump installation for homes
The engineers at Meridian Cooling pride themselves on their ability to recommend the right heat pump for homes. We’ll take into account where the external heat pump unit should be placed and how much energy you require from your heat pump to recommend the right one. Typically, the smaller the heat loss, the smaller the size of the heat pump required. And the cooler you like your home the smaller the heat pump you’ll require, too.
Meridian Cooling is MCS accredited, which means all of our residential heat pump installations are quality assured. After a thorough consultation process, we’ll set an installation date and ensure your heat pump installation is carried out with minimal disruption to your home life.
Why should you invest in a heat pump for your home?
Heat pumps are multi-functional units that offer both heating and cooling. But there are a whole host of other benefits, too, including:
- High energy efficiency ratings
- Reducing your energy bills
- Reducing your carbon footprint
- Preventing condensation and the formation of mould and mildew
- Improving the air quality of your home
We’ve written a total guide to heat pumps, which provides you with more detail about why investing in a heat pump might be a good idea for your home.

Whether your heat pump has been installed by Meridian Cooling or not, we offer maintenance contracts to ensure your home’s heat pump is always running as efficiently and as effectively as possible. Neglected heat pumps can use 10% to 25% more energy than a well looked after heat pump.
